Congratulations to the 7 Saints in the Class of 2017 who have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists. These students represent 11% of their class, again giving St. Andrew's the highest percentage of Semifinalists of any school in Mississippi! The students are (from left) John Chase Bryan, Spencer Carter, Allie Kate Williams, Emma McNeel, Tanya Shenoy, Drew Friedrich, and Peter Martin.
About 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists each September. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements. In February, the names of the students who advanced to Finalist are announced.
7 additional members of the Class of 2017 have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation! Thomas Hammons, Gillian Raley, Assata DeMyers, Madeline Cook, Morgan Dunnigan, Nicholas Mungan, and Alex Auchus have been named Commended Students for their outstanding performances on the PSAT. Over 1.6 million students took the PSAT last October, and only the top 3% are recognized as National Merit Commended Students and Semifinalists.
These 7 students, together with our 7 Semifinalists (John Chase Bryan, Spencer Carter, Allie Kate Williams, Emma McNeel, Tanya Shenoy, Drew Friedrich, and Peter Martin) represent 20% of the eligible students from the Class of 2017! Go Saints!
