Explorer Camp

Exclusively for 5th through 8th grades, Explorer Camp features a smart and entertaining array of camps. Campers will engage in fun learning experiences on the North Campus each day until noon. After that, they will eat lunch, and then take a SA bus to the Briarwood Pool in Jackson to swim from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. The bus will drop After Care Campers on the South Campus and then head back to the North Campus for all remaining campers to be picked up by 3:30 p.m.

Explorer Camp meets on the North Campus, Monday through Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m., with drop off beginning at 7:45 a.m. After Camp Care runs until 5:45 p.m. on the South Campus and can be added for an additional $60 per week.

List of 8 items.

  • Week 1: Ancient Technology (June 7 – 11)

Like Minecraft in real life! Campers will spend time investigating the way ancients would have solved problems (shelter, hunting for food, warmth), making and using basic hand tools, and building different types of structures. Get ready to get dirty!
  • Week 2: Shark Tank (June 14 – 18)

Campers will use this week to hone their entrepreneurial skills, either by finding a need that is underserved or figuring out a way to disrupt an already existing service. They will work to refine their pitch and product before presenting to a panel of SA sharks.
  • Week 3: The Art of Spying (June 21 – 25)

Students will learn how to become field agents bent on acquiring intelligence and other assets. Students will learn how to stick to a cover identity, be cool under pressure, leave dead drops and break codes, and how to make contingencies in case they are burned. They will learn about famous historical (and fictional spies) and try their hands at gadget making.
  • Week 4: Build a Better Mousetrap (June 28 – July 2)

A week purely focussed on building outrageous machines. Using Rube Goldberg and Joseph’s Machines as inspiration, campers will build outrageously complex machines that do impossibly simple tasks. We will be putting our knowledge of simple machines and timing to good use!
  • Week 5: Escape Room! (July 6 – July 9*)

We will visit a Jackson area escape room to try out the experience on our own before spending the rest of the week designing and testing our own rooms, which will be calibrated to challenge both adults and campers from the lower school. Don’t miss out on this fabulous week!

*No camp on Monday, July 5.

    Week 5 Pricing:
    Day Camp – $200/week
    After Camp Care – $50/week
  • Week 6: Bridge Building Challenge (July 12 – 16)

Campers will form competing engineering firms for this week’s challenge. They will balance the cost of materials, time, and size constraints before stress-testing their bridges at the end of the week. Hard hats not required!
  • Week 7: Filmmaking (July 19 – 23)

Campers will use iPads to make their directorial dreams come true! We will experiment with making live action and stop motion projects, practice script writing, and try our hand at filming commercials.
  • Week 8: Let’s Game it Out (July 26 – 30)

We will spend this week looking at the design behind some popular card and board games, before creating our own! Students will choose whether they want to make a board game or card game, pen rules, and run play tests.
