    • Students will explore how education is used by local leaders to fight poverty in high-risk communities.
    • Students will learn about harnessing Costa Rica’s volcanic activity as a safe and sustainable energy source.
    • Students will gain an understanding of how educating local farmers about bee cultivation and honey production has served to both empower them and aid reforestation and watershed protection efforts.

Tentative Itinerary

Day 1 – Friday, May 29

Departure from Jackson; Arrival in San Jose; Explore the city

Day 2 – Saturday, May 30

San Jose: Leadership Workshop at Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation; Global Exchange with students from a local city school

Day 3 – Sunday, May 31

Travel to Rincon de la Vieja; Leadership at an oyster farm; Exploring sustainable harvesting

Day 4 – Monday, June 1

Guanacaste Coast; Hike in a national park; Leadership workshop with a local volcanologist and a renewable energy sources specialist; canopy tour via zip-line

Day 5 – Tuesday, June 2

Guanacaste Coast: Leadership workshop at Intertidal Explorer Program
Snorkeling along inshore reefs; Leadership workshop with community entrepreneurs to host an up-cycling workshop for local-kids to find new ways to re-purpose simple times to generate profit

Day 6 – Wednesday, June 3

Guanacaste Coast: Leadership workshop in the local fishing industry and promotion of sustainable consumption of seafood; Boat tours with fishing; Hands-on sea-to-table experience

Day 7 – Thursday, June 4

Guanacaste Coast: Leadership workshop on reforestation and watershed protection; enjoying the last day at Nicola Peninsula designated as one of the world’s “Blue Zones” where residents lives the longest and healthiest

Day 8 – Friday, June 5
