Collaboration with Murrah for National Council of Teachers of English Presentation

Recently Dr. Carolyn Brown, former St. Andrew's English teacher who retired last Spring, and Dr. Julie Rust presented alongside Sarah Ballard, Murrah High School English teacher, at this year's National Council of Teachers of English conference. Their session entitled "Grappling with Self and Other in Welty's Where is the Voice Coming From: A Confluence of Classrooms" featured a collaboration last Spring between Dr. Brown's and Ms. Ballard's 10th grade English students, with the originally planned field trip to Murrah to discuss the short story being moved to a Zoom conversation due to COVID. The story deals directly with racism in Jackson MS (written from the perspective of the man who murdered Medgar Evers), and the conversation that resulted was powerful indeed.
