Seal & Motto

The St. Andrew’s Seal, designed by art teacher Lewis Hitt in 1978, contains a navy circular band, which surrounds a shield of the same color. On the circle is inscribed the school’s name and the date 1947, the year of its founding. The shield is divided into four sections by a red or white cross in the form of the Greek letter “chi,” whose shape recalls the cross on which Saint Andrew was martyred. The uppermost section contains a white magnolia, symbolizing Mississippi. The left section contains the Church shield, which is reminiscent of the school’s Anglican heritage. Complementing this on the right is the brightly shining lamp of learning. In the lower portion is the anchor of faith, which symbolizes the school’s Christian faith and recalls Saint Andrew’s vocation as a fisherman.

Finally, between the outer circle and the inner shield is the school motto, Inveniemus Viam Aut Faciemus. The motto, adopted by vote of the student body in 1979, is rendered in translation as “We will find a way, or we will make one.

Hymn

The official St. Andrew’s hymn is “For All the Saints,” and is sung to the tune Sine Nomine.

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might;
thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight;
thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the apostles' glorious company,
who bearing forth the cross o'er land and sea,
shook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
and hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west;
soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest;
sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
the King of glory passes on his way.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Prayer

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who has blessed us
with the joy and care of children;
Bless, we pray you, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School;
Give our teachers, parents, and students light and strength so to train and learn, that all of us might love whatsoever things are true and pure and lovely;
Grant us grace to choose the good and to reject evil;
Give us knowledge and understanding of the mysteries of
your creation;
All this we ask in the name of Him, who learned as a youth,
Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
