Academic Camps

St. Andrew’s offers a wide range of Academic camps to help get your kid’s mind back in shape for fall and get a jump start on the new school year. They’re especially beneficial for new students, and those who have been referred by their teachers. Class size is limited to sixteen students per teacher. If there is additional interest, we will consider opening a second class. Please contact your child’s teacher or advisor for more information. Non-St. Andrew’s Students are welcome.

  • Debate Summer Program

    When: July 30 - August 3, 9:00am - 2:00pm
    Where: North Campus
    Eligible Grades: 7th - 10th
    Instructors: Darin Maier, Jharick Shields, Ishan Bhatt
    St. Andrew's Debate Summer Program will provide basic instruction in debate and seeks the development of all peoples' skill to argue. The camp will cover the foundations of the three basic styles of debate found in high school competition: Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, and Public Forum.
  • Eye Can Do It - Session 1

    When: June 18-22, 1:00pm to 4:00pm
    Where: South Campus
    Eligible Grades: K-4th

    Eye Can Do It is an opportunity for your child to participate in a variety of fun games that are geared toward improving their fine motor and hand-eye coordination. It will be filled with fun activities and experiences that help improve your child's overall performance at school, home and when playing sports or with friends. Your child will perform a variety of activities ranging from yoga and dance to painting and no bake cooking. Handwriting, shoe tying, and sensory stimulation through experiencing various textures and movements will be performed as well. While this camp is offered by an Occupational Therapist that specializes in early childhood development and educational intervention, it is not meant to replace one-on-one therapy intervention.


    **For an additional $125, Campers can complete their week with Kinder (K-1st) or Adventure (2nd-4th) Camp. You can drop them off in morning carpool and we'll get them to Eye Can Do It in the afternoon. They'll be having fun with the regular day campers before Eye Can Do It! 

    For campers who choose to complete their week with Kinder or Adventure Camp, we also offer Lunch Club for an additional $35 - a freshly prepared bag lunch each day with a sandwich (ham/cheese, turkey/cheese, or sunbutter/jelly), pack of goldfish or cheez-its, juice box, fruit and a sweet.

    After Camp Care until 5:45 p.m. is available for an additional $55 to those who add Kinder or Adventure Camp.

  • Typing at the Speed of Thought - Session 1

    When: July 9-13, 9:00am to 12:00pm

    Rising fifth through tenth graders can improve their typing skills in this Keyboarding Short Course designed to help students learn proper keyboarding skills to help them become more proficient in using QWERTY keyboards. Middle School teacher Jan Michael will introduce you to the home keys, proper hand position, alternate keystrokes and some common keyboard shortcuts, all while encouraging students to develop speed and accuracy in keyboarding.

    **For an additional $125, Campers can complete their week with Explorer Camp. You can drop them off in morning carpool and we'll get them to and from Typing. They'll be having fun with the regular day campers before and after Typing! 

    After Camp Care until 5:45 p.m. is available on the SOUTH CAMPUS for an additional $55 to those who add Explorer Camp.

      • This fun and helpful camp is a great way to get your rising first grader ready for first grade reading. Students will get a jump on skills that will be covered during the first months of first grade. Taught by veteran teachers Judy Menist and Pat Sudduth, this camp session is sure to build skills and confidence in your child.

      • Get your rising 2nd grader ready for math with a review/preview in math. Using manipulatives and various activities, we will work to solve problems and build understanding of early 2nd grade math concepts.
     
    **Gear Up Campers can complete their week by adding Adventure Camp to their enrollment package! Drop them off in morning carpool, and pick them up at the end of the day - we'll get them to and from Gear Ups. The rest of the day they'll be with their friends in regular day camp!     • Fourth Grade Gear Up for Language Arts:
      • Led by Brookley Carmichael, students will get a jump start on the fourth grade writer’s workshop through targeted writing activities. Refreshing their writing voice and practicing writing skills will help students start in the fall with greater confidence in their abilities and increased comfort sharing their work with their peers. Narrative writing skills will be the focus, as these will be the building blocks for all writing modes in the fourth grade classroom
    • Fourth Grade Gear Up for Math:
      • Facilitated by Val Dembny, rising fourth graders will use hands-on materials and activities to refresh skills, develop conceptual understanding, and gain confidence for success in fourth grade math. Problem solving will be a prime focus, but also included will be mental math strategies, model drawing, and number sense.
    **Gear Up Campers can complete their week by adding Adventure Camp to their enrollment package! Drop them off in morning carpool, and pick them up at the end of the day - we'll get them to and from Gear Ups. The rest of the day they'll be with their friends in regular day camp!       • Rising fifth graders will review key concepts while getting acquainted with the middle school. Expect to participate in hands-on activities and math games. Bring a water bottle and a pencil!

    • Sixth Grade Gear Up for Math:
      • Rising sixth graders will review key concepts through hands-on activities and math games. Please bring a water bottle and a pencil.
  • Seventh Grade Gear Up for Pre-Algebra

    When: July 30-August 3, 8:00am to 9:30am

    Eligible Grades: 7th

  • Get a Grip on Grammar

    Basic English grammar including parts of speech, active and passive verbs, phrases, conjugations indirect and direct objects will be covered using the Framing Your Thoughts curriculum from Project READ. This curriculum honors all learning styles and provides lessons built on direct-concept teaching utilizing multi-sensory lessons. Pencil and paper not needed. Students often find it hard to believe that it is time to go home!
  • Study Skills to Motivate & Maximize Student Learning

    When: July 30-August 3, 1:00pm to 4:00pm

    Eligible Grades: 5th-8th

    Learn how to improve the ability to learn, retain and retrieve information. The aim of this course is to help students make more efficient use of study time, make learning easier, retain what is learned, and feel the work and effort involved is worthwhile. We will cover the following areas: learning styles, organizational skills, how to pay attention, active listening skills, note-taking strategies, reading comprehension, active studying (test prep and study strategies), homework, and a parent review session on Friday.
  • Writing Reminder Workshops

    Writing Reminder Workshops:
    Need a little help dusting off the cobwebs from your writing? Come jump start your writing skills with this refresher workshop, offered in three sessions, on everything from MLA format and formal standard English rules to organizing a paragraph and a five paragraph essay. Let’s sweep those writing dust bunnies away and have our English teachers yelling “Hooray!”

    This class is required for all new St. Andrew’s Students.

    Algebra Review for High School Math
    This course is a review of the main topics in algebra for students preparing for Geometry or Algebra II, or anyone who needs a brush-up. It will cover a range of topics including equation and inequality solving, graphing, systems of equations, exponents and polynomials, radical expressions, and general problem solving. You’ll gain confidence in these skills as you prepare for the new year.

    Effective Study Habits & Skills
    Study habits are general techniques used for organizing one’s self and managing one’s time. Habits reviewed include: organizing a notebook/binder, recording assignments, setting up a personal study area, prioritizing assignments, being aware of one’s learning style, and maintaining a positive attitude. Study skills are specific abilities one has mastered to facilitate learning.
  • The Reading Clinic

    When: July 2-20 (Monday to Friday), Times to be determined by enrollment
    Where: South Campus
    Eligible Grades: 1st-4th
    Cost: $800**
    Instructor: Helen Green & Anne Ranck

    A multi-sensory structured intervention for dyslexia and reading difficulties. Alphabetic Phonics is a system developed at the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas, and is an extension of the Orton-Gillingham approach to remedial language training. The Reading Clinic teachers are certified as Alphabetic Phonics Therapists by the Payne Center in Oklahoma. They have a combined total of over 50 years teaching in the classroom. This three-week class meets for two hours each day; specific times will be determined by enrollment.

    **Reading Clinic Campers can complete their week by adding Kinder or Adventure Camp to their enrollment package! Drop them off in morning carpool, and pick them up at the end of the day - we'll get them to and from Reading Clinic. The rest of the day they'll be with their friends in day camp! Cost: $100 extra per week.
