Learning

Upper School

Upper Schoolers are challenged across a wide variety of disciplines. In fact, St. Andrew's offers advanced classes not found anywhere else in Mississippi. Students embrace the challenge because they know they are not alone. Teachers know what each student is capable of achieving, and are by their side every step of the way.

Curriculum

St. Andrew’s Upper School inspires and supports students in a way that not only prepares them for college, but also encourages them to become lifelong learners, creative problem-solvers, and engaged citizens of multiple communities. Students grow in awareness, empathy, and the capacity to self-advocate. As students progress through the Upper School, they enjoy more academic choices and varying levels of classes that best meet the individual needs of each student, as well as an array of athletic, artistic, and service-learning opportunities that round out their educational experiences.

College Preparation

Families begin college counseling as they enter ninth grade. At St. Andrew’s, however, college preparation is more than just the on-paper requirements for students to be accepted into their desired schools. Every aspect of daily student life at St. Andrew’s encourages independence, self-direction, and critical thinking and discussion. These are the skills that will ultimately allow our graduates to become leaders in their fields.

Student Support Services

St. Andrew’s seeks to be a challenging academic environment that helps students live into their potential. We provide multiple resources to help students develop resilient life skills and work habits that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Service Learning

Upper School students spearhead projects that benefit causes they personally champion. Projects have ranged from serving as counselors at an equestrian camp for inner city children to helping build a library in Nepal, from constructing houses in Mississippi through Habitat for Humanity to performing humanitarian work in Cuba.

Peer Leadership

St. Andrew’s was the first school in Mississippi to offer a Peer Leadership mentoring program. Seniors representing a cross-section of the school community are chosen to serve as mentors, meeting with a group of freshmen once per week. Topics may be as serious as Honor Code infractions or as light as what to wear to Homecoming. Through the Peer Leadership program, seniors serve as role models and confidantes, and freshmen learn that while everyone struggles from time to time, they can count on their peers at St. Andrew’s for support.

Athletics

St. Andrew’s athletes participate. They learn perseverance, leadership, and work ethic. The Saints participate in the most competitive association for Mississippi high school sports, the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA), and have been recognized for having the best all-around sports program in its class for the last 18 straight years.

Faculty

St. Andrew’s recruits the highest-caliber faculty, drawn from local, national, and global avenues. Teachers learn expert methods to stimulate independent discussion.

Spiritual Growth

Upper School students may participate in Religion classes that explore scripture, ethics, theology, and the world’s religions. Members of our community are encouraged to contemplate and comprehend the implications of a changing world while becoming well-anchored in their own moral and religious values.
