Baseball Secures Saints' 6th State Title in 2017-18

The 2018 St. Andrew’s baseball team won the MHSAA 3A State Championship last Thursday with an extra inning victory over North Pontotoc by the score of 3-2. The Saints won game 1 by the score of 4-3 on Tuesday evening and Thursday’s win completed the sweep and set off a celebration for the Saints players and their fans. The 1-2 punch of C.J. Carron and Holland Townes on the mound proved to be too much for North Pontotoc to overcome in this series. Good defense by the Saints and clutch hitting by Avery Thomas, Banks Tolley, and David DuCote helped to provide just enough margin for a victory in each game. The championship game ended in the bottom of the 8th as Banks Tolley drove in Sam Roffwarg with a sacrifice fly for the walkoff win.

 

The win gave the Saints their 33rd win of the season, which is the most wins by any team in Mississippi, as well as school record for wins in a season. The Saints will graduate six seniors from the team this season, all of whom played a vital part in this championship season. Seniors on the 2018 team are Evan Bowman, C.J. Carron, Cameron Daniels, Dickson Ray, Sam Roffwarg, and Banks Tolley.

 

The baseball State Championship was the 6th state title won by the Saints this year, making 2017-18 the most successful year in the 70-year history of St. Andrew’s. From a field of 46 3A schools in Mississippi, the Saints emerged victorious in baseball, boys basketball, boys cross country, boys swimming, girls track and field, and tennis. Go Saints!
