On October 17, the entire lower school celebrated the festival of Diwali. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated in India and many other countries. Diwali spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.

Thanks to the efforts of parent volunteers and student participants, the entire lower school learned the basic tenets of this very special holiday. This is the second year that Diwali has been celebrated in this manner at St. Andrew’s and it is a very inclusive event as all students are welcome to participate regardless of their cultural backgrounds.

This year, early childhood students celebrated with a parent-led Bollywood dance-along that was followed by classroom tea parties with Indian snacks and mango drinks. The 1st through 4th grades collectively put on a show. The 1st grade showcased the beautiful and colorful outfits in a fabulous fashion show. The 2nd grade had us clapping along as they did a dance to the song “Happy Diwali!” The 3rd grade put on a skit and shared with us how a family gets ready for the holiday and demonstrated a traditional Indian Diya (or candle) dance. And the 4th graders, as MCs, did a great job taking us along on this entire journey to better understand Diwali! Here’s a video from the celebration, and here’s a photo gallery.

Like last year, each lower school student received a diya (pronounced DHEE-YA) and can participate in Diwali at home by simply lighting it on November 7! “We are honored to share our traditions and culture with the student body of St. Andrew’s,” says 1st grade assistant teacher, mom, and volunteer Rubina Sethi. “It is humbling to receive such great support from the school, faculty, and staff. From the bottom of our hearts, namaste, and happy Diwali!”
