Saints Take 1st at Mississippi Math and Science Competition
Last Friday, February 7, twelve students—who were nominated by the St. Andrew’s Upper School mathematics and science faculty—went to Mississippi College in Clinton to compete in the 2020 Mississippi Science and Mathematics Tournament. That morning, each student took two multiple choice tests in either biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or computer science. The total scores from these tests were used to determine the overall winner. Out of the 39 schools from throughout the state, St. Andrew's finished 1st place during Friday's competition.
In addition, the afternoon featured a quiz bowl competition. Abigail Calimaran, Forrest Hutchison, John Kees, and Vinson Lu comprised the St. Andrew’s team and finished in 2nd place. "It was an outstanding performance by all of the students involved," said Upper School Science Teacher Dr. Claudia Bhagat.
The individual results were: Saatvik Agrawal: 1st place in computer science and top 10% in mathematics; Abigail Calimaran: top 10% in biology; Chloe Chen: 2nd place in mathematics; Osose Ewaleifoh: top 10% in mathematics and top 20% in biology; Forrest Hutchison: 2nd place in physics and top 10% in mathematics; Steve Jiang: top 10% in physics and top 20% in mathematics; John Kees: 2nd place in mathematics and 3rd place in chemistry; Sameer Khan: top 10% in both chemistry and biology; Vinson Lu: 1st place in physics and top 10% mathematics; Wake Monroe: top 10% in both biology and physics; Toni Oluwatade: top 10% in biology and top 20% in chemistry; and Joshua Robertson: top 10% in biology.
