Author Visits to Lower and Middle School

On Friday, August 19, Lower and Middle School joined in the excitement of the Mississippi Book Festival by hearing from two visiting authors. Middle School heard from Angela May, founder of May Media and PR, former award-winning television news journalist, and co-author of "Search for Treasure." This sequel to New York Times bestselling authors Mary Alice Monroe and Angela May's The Islanders is a beautiful story of friendship, loss, and the healing power of nature.

All 1st- 4th graders had the opportunity to attend a virtual KidNote Event held by the Festival. The presentation was "Crafting Stories" with Matt de la Peña, author of Milo Imagines the World. Matt de la Peña is the New York Times Bestselling, Newbery Medal-winning author of seven young adult novels and six picture books. "We were so excited to hear from Matt because he works closely with Christian Robinson," said Lower School Librarian Sara Clark. "Christian Robinson is the illustrator for the story Milo Imagines the World, and he was selected by Global Read Aloud as the Picture Book Creator choice for this year!" Beginning early October and running through mid-November, a book is selected for a 6-week period during which teachers read aloud to students in order to make global connections. "Global collaboration is important to show students they are part of something bigger than themselves," continued Clark. "Matt de la Peña's stories allow us to connect and appreciate those around us."
