2022-23 John D. Bower INSTAR Fellows

The Dr. John D. Bower INSTAR Scholars program launched a new year of research on Thursday, August 25. "This is the largest group of independent researchers than any other in our school's history," said Upper School science teacher Marks McWhorter. "As it stands now, we're expecting 21 students to be conducting research this year." Students met to learn the scope and timeline of their research, and veteran students shared their experiences and advice for staying organized.

Named after Dr. John D. Bower — founder of Kidney Care Inc. who spent his life passionately advocating for both accessibility and affordability for his patients — the program is designed for students interested in gaining experience in scientific research. Upon completion of this program, students will not only present an independent research project at the regional science fair, they will also have knowledge of various skills useful to those interested in a scientific field in the future. The ultimate goal of the program is for students to begin collaborations with and learn from those directly involved in research in the greater community. As students develop, the hope is that they begin actively working with professors and medical professionals across disciplines to give them a greater glimpse into the scientific field.
