Congratulations to Upper School Teacher Jim Foley whose panel proposal, at which he will also be a presenter, to the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR) has been accepted for this coming July's annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His proposal examines teaching about the intersection of slavery and alcohol, specifically through two of the books that he uses with his students in AP and Honors United States History — Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave and Melton McLaurin's Celia, a Slave. "My paper addresses how I teach these two difficult subjects with my students," said Foley. "This gathering of historians and history teachers fosters the sharing of both historical content and history pedagogy. It should be a valuable experience."
