St. Andrew's Celebrates Black History Month

Across all divisions during the month of February, St. Andrew's has been celebrating Black History Month. Below is a list of the ways our students and faculty have celebrated through activities, chapels, and guest speakers.
  • To kickoff the month of activities, events and speakers, the Black Student Union (BSU) held a breakfast on February 1.
  • Senior Enyla Blackmon and alumna Assata DeMeyers '17 spoke to Lower School students during Big Chapel on black excellence, and Britney Wolfe, ECC Fitness Instructor, danced to honor the occasion on February 3.
  • On February 7, St. Andrew's parent LeJeune Johnson organized an activity called the ABCs of Black History Month to help pre-k4 students learn about notable African Americans. Additionally, Diversity Prefect and BSU member Kara Pickett read Hair Love to Lea Crongeyer's pre-k3 class.
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator Sarah Spann spoke at Big Chapel on February 10 about her grandfather, Bishop Phillip Coleman.
  • On February 15, Maisie Brown (pictured) spoke to Middle Schoolers on her activism work and using their voice to create positive change in their communities. She also had lunch with BSU members.
  • On Wednesday, February 22, the school welcomed back DePriest Dockins, the first black student to enroll in the school in 1967, to speak and have lunch with Upper School students.
  • Today, February 28, Foundations students decorated donuts using red, yellow, and green sprinkles to create stop lights in celebration of the accomplishments of Garrett Morgan who was an American inventor and entrepreneur who contributed to the advancement of the traffic signal.
Thank you to all of the members of our community who have contributed and participated in this month's events as we honored Black History Month!
