Saints Take Gold in Mississippi Math and Science Competition

Last Thursday, twelve students who were nominated by the St. Andrew’s Upper School mathematics and science faculty went to Mississippi College in Clinton to compete in the 2023 Mississippi Math and Science Tournament. This tournament was suspended for two years because of covid restrictions, so it was a welcome opportunity for our students to showcase their hard work and talent.

In the morning each student took a multiple-choice test in either biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics. The total scores from these tests were used to determine the overall winner. Out of the 32 schools from throughout the state, St. Andrew's finished in 1st place. In addition, the afternoon featured a quiz bowl competition. Joy Dhar, Sandra Crowder, Blake Bell, and Joshua Thorne comprised the St. Andrew’s team and finished in 1st place. It was an outstanding performance by all the students involved.

The individual results were: Blake Bell: 1st place in mathematics; Turner Smith: 1st place in chemistry; Joshua Thorne: 1st place in physics; Joy Dhar: 3rd place in biology; Preston Daily: 3rd place in physics; Patten Lane: 3rd place in physics; Tina Garg: top 10% in chemistry; Sandra Crowder: top 20% in biology; Carol Rappai: top 20% in chemistry; Gabriella Zevallos: top 20% in mathematics; Congratulations, Saints!
