Research identifies seven key skills children need to be successful in school and in life (Schiller, 2010). These essential skills are self-confidence, curiosity, intentionality, self-control, cooperation, relatedness, and communication. I would love to help our early childhood students begin building these foundational qualities during this critical stage of development.
Preschool-aged children (PreK-3 and PreK-4) are at a unique stage where their minds are highly flexible, their social worlds are expanding, and their sense of self is beginning to take shape. Early intervention and intentional instruction in these seven skills can have a lasting impact on how they approach learning, relationships, and challenges. Helping children develop confidence, curiosity, and cooperation now sets them up for lifelong success both academically and emotionally. The group will meet for sessions dedicated to each of the seven skills.
Each session will include:
-Engaging activities designed to practice and strengthen the target skill.
-Carefully selected children’s literature that illustrates the concept in age-appropriate ways.
-Discussions and reflections that encourage self-awareness and social understanding.
-A fun, supportive, and interactive environment where learning feels like play.
Through these sessions, children will build essential life skills in a nurturing setting that supports their emotional growth, communication abilities, and social confidence.
As a counseling intern, I am eager for opportunities to strengthen my skills as a counselor, group leader, and facilitator, while also completing my required internship hours for school. This group offers a meaningful experience for both the children and myself. Having previously taught many of these students at Foundations, I already share a strong rapport with them and their families. I believe parents will appreciate an opportunity for their child to participate in a group that supports emotional intelligence, connection, and growth in such a positive way.
This group will be a fun and enriching experience where little minds can explore big ideas and learn how to understand themselves, connect with others, and approach the world with confidence and curiosity. It’s a wonderful opportunity to nurture young learners, support families, and help me continue developing as a counselor while giving back to a community I deeply care about.
Instructor's Bio:
My name is Abby Cockerill, and I have been a Pre-K2 teacher at Foundations for the past four years. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Counseling at Delta State University.
I am deeply passionate about social and emotional learning and believe that teaching children emotional regulation and interpersonal skills early on sets the stage for lifelong success. I see young children as capable, curious, and resilient learners who can do far more than many people realize. As both an educator and advocate for young minds, I feel it’s my responsibility to help them learn how to understand themselves, connect with others, and navigate the world with confidence and empathy. Working with little ones brings me great joy. I love being part of their growth, discovery, and development every day. Through this enrichment group, I hope to continue supporting children and families while also strengthening my own skills as a counselor and group leader.
